The rhythms of life

by John on February 26th, 2009

I am currently learning to play golf because my family kindly gave me a birthday gift of six golf lessons with a golf pro. I am half way through this process and enjoying it immensely and have friends who will be really thrilled to hear this good news!!

My coach has been trying to help me understand the ‘rhythm of the swing.’  The posture, swing and position of the body, club and eyes. Real golfers will know all about this!

I initially tried to swing the club in order to hit the ball outside of the driving range. Not good! I am being taught it is all about rhythm, balance and positioning and not brute force.

As I relax and focus I start to understand what he is saying. I left the third lesson exhilarated and started to think about the ‘rhythms of life.’

In all that we do there is the element of  ‘gracious living’ and this grace life is all about living life to the full.  It is not about exerting unnecessary pressure upon myself in order to be a better person. This use of driving force to achieve my goals causes undue stress – unlike the ‘unforced rhythms of grace’  which helps us to live in harmony with Him…… That is where I want to be!

Jesus encourages those of us who are tired, worn out or burned out trying so hard to please Him to come to him and learn about the unforced rhythms of grace.

“Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me – watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.” [The Message]

These golfing lessons have been helpful to understand a little more about how Jesus wants me to walk with him. The statement below helps me to further understand Father’s  desire for my life.

“So this is my prayer: that your love will flourish and that you will not only love much but well.” [Italics mine]
